Flugplatzgaststätte

Idar-Oberstein · Naheland

At 480 meters above sea level lies one of Idar-Oberstein's most popular and unusual spit-roast restaurants: the Göttschied airfield restaurant has been an institution for locals and out-of-towners alike for decades. Tenant Helga Roßmann has been running the show here for 30 years. The important position at the fireplace is held by flight director Achim Keune: Over the open beech wood fire he roasts the delicacies that attract guests from near and far and that earned the restaurant this year the award of the magazine "Fliegermagazin" as "Best Airfield Restaurant in Europe". The restaurant is also known in aviation circles because, under code names such as "Lima," "Romeo," "Foxtrot" or "Sierra," you can place your order for the house specialties from the air.

But just as important as the typical 350-gram, tender, pink-roasted pork loins or the juicy roast beef with the radish salad and the slice of farmhouse bread on the side is the incomparable ambience of the restaurant: In the warmer half of the year, the gliders and motorfluges taking off and landing - especially from the outdoor terrace - create a sense of freedom, adventure and wide world. But even on gloomy days, you are very close to the sky and the clouds in the guest room with the airplane models hanging from the ceiling, and you have a wide view of the horizon, where behind the villages of Veitsrodt and Herborn, the gateway to the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park can be seen with the silhouette of the Wildenberg Tower.
