William Turner - Standort 15 | St. Goar

At the end of the towpath; Looking towards the Lorelei and Burg KatzTurner

sketches this other view looking towards the Lorelei and Burg Katz.

The watercolour is considered the most interesting of Turner’s seven

depictions of the Lorelei. The dark cliff casts its shadow on the

salmon fishers, thus symbolizing the danger emanating from the fabled

Lorelei rock. In the background we catch a glimpse of the safe harbour

at St. Goarshausen, illuminated through the clouds by the last rays of

the sinking sun. The suggestion of St. Goarshausen and Burg Katz in the

background give the watercolour marvellous depth.
